CAPTAIN'S
FISHING REPORT
2004
SEASON
12-09-04 Another great fishing season has come to a close for the Deborah Ann
IV. The Spring started out slow, but when the Sound's waters got warmer the
fishing got Hot! The good news is we landed more fish this year then ever
before. The bad news is larger fish seemed to be fewer in number then normal.
However, there was plenty of action right up until our last trip in mid
November. We jigged Blues and Stripers off Larchmont on the last trip of the
year. On behalf of the Captain and our deckhands we would like to thank all
our friends that rode and fished with us this season. We hope to see you all
again in the Spring. The 2005 season opens for us on Saturday April 2. Happy
Holidays to all and have a safe winter. Speaking of the Holidays, if you need
a last minute gift or don't know what to give someone, how about a fishing trip
or boat ride? Give it now, pay for it next year. Call 203 792-2277 for
details. It is never to early to book a trip on the Deborah Ann IV. Keep in
touch, we will be updating the site over the winter months. 10-23-04 Good job
by the Tom K Party of 4, landing 16 blues and 2 stripers and currently
holding the biggest bluefish lead with a 7.1 pounder. The 2 striped bass were
both 9 + but did not beat 9.9 making Ms. Bigham STILL the striper leader.
Stripers are starting to show, so come on down. Only 20 fishing days left
until next season! 10-16-04 The Adams family and friends targeted porgies and
caught their limit with a few sea bass and blues mixed in. Lots of bluefish
around with a few stripers being caught on the bait. Striper bite should
pickup as the water temp starts to drop. Amazingly, the 9.9 pound striper
still holds the T-shirt contest lead for the end of year grand prize. That
has to be broken any day now. Only a month left in the season, so if you want
one last chance for the big ones, give us a call.09-26-04 Good job by the
John Upshaw and boys party catching over 30 blues, keeping only what they
could use and releasing the rest. The Blazer Pub "Committee" had a
good day on Sunday, jigging up 47 blues and then catching 3 more on bait to settle
the pool, won by "Billy Blacktop". Plenty of blues action, and bass
should be starting to show shortly, so come on down, while there is still
time.08-29-04 BLUES continue to school up chasing the massive amount of bait
that is in the area. The Phillips and Byrnes parties caught as many blues as
they wanted, keeping only a few for the table and playing catch and release
with the rest. The Soho party caught their limit on an all day outing. We
switched over to fluke and were pleasantly surprised when 6 nice keepers came
over the rail, the largest going nearly 21 inches. Come on out while the nice
weather is still around. Come out and join the fun.08-21-04 BLUES, BLUES,
BLUES, right in our backyard. The Don Hopko party caught their limit on a
half day outing. The bad weather held off and the fish were plentiful. If you
like a lot of action, nows the time. Give us a call and come out and join the
fun. But, as all good fisherman already know, every day is a new adventure.
08-08-04 Great job by the Kevin McGill party who caught their limit of BLUES
by 11 AM and let me go home early. Thank you gentlemen, great work. Fish were
hard to find yesterday but back in force today. Now if we only knew where
they go to hide. 08-06-04 BLUES,BLUES,BLUES, all shapes and sizes. The fish
have been schooling up right outside our homeport making for lots of fishing
time. The Alexander party from Poundridge jigged up 55 fish on a 4 hour trip.
If you like the fun of catching lots of hard fighting fish, nows the time.
Most productive fishing thus far this year. Give us a call while there are
dates still open.07-22-04 Bluefish action this week has been red hot in mid
Sound. Jigging fish in the 3 to 6 pound range has provided a lot of action.
Come out and join the fun while it lasts.07-11-04 Bluefish have at long last
found there way into mid sound. Jigging was the name of the game this past
week. Heaviest bluefish current leading weight is 6.9, caught by Mike
Carroll. Congratulations to Mike are latest world famous Deborah Ann IV tee
shirt winner. Fluke are also present on our side of the pond.06-28-04 Fluke
is the sure bet now. Blues and bass have been hit or miss. Some days we
catch, some days we don't catch. When things are slow on the bluefish front
we change over to fluke. Congratulations to Steven Napoli our latest
Tee-shirt winner. Steve landed a 4.4 pound fluke on last Saturday's trip.
Come out and join the fun. 06-06-04 We had a few mixed bag trips this week.
Blues,Striped Bass and Fluke all coming over the rail. A few keeper bass and
fluke in the 2 pound range. Nothing big enough to beat the heaviest fish
leaders however. Tee shirts are in and looking good. Tee shirts can also be
purchased if you aren't lucky enough to win one. Bluefish action should
pickup as the water temp is now over 60 degrees. Still some open weekend
dates in June, if you are thinking of coming out.05-30-04 Bluefish have
arrived. Fish are in the 3 to 4 pound cocktail variety at the moment.
Heaviest fish contest leading weights are as follows: Striper 9.9, Bluefish 4.2,
Fluke 2.9. It's still early. Come out and join the fun. 05-23-04 Fluke season
started out slow on the 15th, but has picked up over the last couple of
outings. We have had fish close to 3 pounds. Stripers have been hit and miss.
We have been targeting bass early, then changing over to Fluke. The Sand
City, Huntington Bay area has been producing, but the fish should start
showing in the Oyster Bay area shortly. Current Heaviest fish contest leaders
thus far: for Fluke 2.9 pounds and for Striped Bass 8.2 pounds. Beat these
weights(easy now), win a tee shirt and be eligible for the grand prize at the
end of the season. 05-03-04 Water temp is now in the 50's and stripers have
arrived. We will be targeting bass for the near future. There are some
flounder around, but not in large numbers. The fish that are caught are nice
size fish however. If you are into stripers give us a call.04-25-04 There are
some flounder on the Long Island side, but not much to speak of locally.
Oyster Bay and LLoyds Harbor are not all that far away however. Blackfish
should be starting to show in May, as well as stripers. Just a reminder, if
you are planning to ride with us, book now so you can get the date you want.
Just leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP. Best time to call is
after 7 PM any evening.03-30-04 The boat is afloat and we are installing some
new electronics as well as cleaning things up for opening day. Not much to
report yet from the few boats that are fishing flounder. Water temp is still
a very cold 34 degrees. Just a note regarding new for 2004, we will be
running open boat one night during the week starting in mid June for Fluke.
More details to follow. 03-20-04 Flounder season opened TODAY. The Deborah
Ann IV is scheduled to be back in the water the end of next week and our
first trip is on April 4th. Say good bye to winter and hello to SPRING. I
will keep you posted on any flounder reports I get, hopefully they will be
positive. Flounder are over due for a come back and lets hope they decide to
make it this year. One positive report I heard is the local lobster guys are
starting to catch again in the western part of the Sound. That is good news.
Hope to see you soon, give us a call and book a date. 02-21-04 We are a
little over a month away from opening day. Time to start getting our fishing
gear in order for what hopefully will be another super season. I am suffering
from cabin fever and can't wait to get back out on the Sound. As soon as the
weather gets a little warmer people start to think about fishing and dates
start to fill up. So if you are thinking of riding with us this season please
plan ahead and call early. SPRING is on the way, I hope. 02-10-04 We have
already begun work on the NEW DEBORAH ANN IV, getting things in shape for the
Spring. Hard to believe but in just 6+ weeks or so Spring will be here. Our
season will open on Saturday, April 3, 2004 and close on Sunday, November,
14, 2004. Reservation lines are open year round and it is never too early to
book a trip. If you have a specific date in mind in the summer months we
would recommend you call early. Deposit checks are never cashed until the
date of your trip so in reality, it dosen't cost anything to book in advance.
The 2003 season ended on a high note, with the boat taking Striped Bass up to
20 pounds. Speaking of larger fish, this season we will be running a heaviest
fish contest. Prizes will be awarded to the anglers that catch and land the
heaviest Striped Bass, Bluefish and Fluke. See the information page for more
details. We are in the process of upgrading the Web site and plan to post
pictures on a weekly basis. Hope you enjoy. THINK SPRING. Capt. B. Come fish
