CAPTAIN'S FISHING REPORT

2003 SEASON

10-20-03 Larger blues and some stripers are starting to move in on chunk baits. Also had a false albie around 12 pounds, some fighters they are. Season wraps up 11-15 so come on out soon if you are interested in some great action. Winter will be here before we know it.09-28-03 Jigging Blues has been fast and furious with large schools chasing peanut bunker on the surface. A few nights ago, on a twilight trip, a party of 5 had 32 Blues in an hour and a half. The bluefish are also starting to gang up in the middle of the Sound on the bottom, so hopefully bait trips should become more productive. Porgies are also still plentiful with some Black sea bass mixed in. There are also some reports of flounder mixing in with the porgies. Thats a good sign. Stripers will also soon be on the move and we should be able to catch our fair share along the way. The next 4 to 5 weeks should be interesting if fishing holds true to form as it has over the last several seasons. So if you are so inclined, give us a call. There are still some weekend dates open, but are going fast. 09-01-03 We had some nice fluke catches in recent trips. Fish up to 6 pounds came over the rail. A lot of short fish mixed in, but plenty of activity. On the bluefish front, the fish are on the move chasing baitfish all over the Sound it seems. When we find them, we catch them. The good news is that the new Deborah Ann IV is in service. She is larger with more deck space a big cabin and fast enough to roam wherever need be to track down the fish. Come on out, we only have a little over 2 months left. The season will be over before we know it. Don't miss out on some good fishing. 08-17-03 Bluefish appeared in mass right outside our harbor this week. On the night of the blackout, The Kevin I. party from New Jersey nearly limited out in 2 hours with some short bass (released of course) up to 26" thrown in the mix, all on jigs and surface plugs. The fluke bite is also productive with fish up to 6 pounds being taken. Porgies continue to be readily available as well. So, come on down and pick a species 07-27-03 Bluefish have taken up their usual home at the "A" bouy of late. We have been chunking fish in the 5 to 6 pound class. The Byington party on vacation from Texas took 12 blues releasing all but one. They also had a nice 5 pound sea bass that deckhand Jim "Butch" Rogan filleted for their dinner. Deborah Ann IV has arrived and will be in service soon. Bigger, faster, finer, stay tuned. 07-13-03 Jigging for Blues has produced the most action of late. They are constantly on the move, but once into the school, action is fast and furious. The Don Hopko party had fish up to 8 pounds on jigs this week. Fluke are in Oyster Bay and there is word of some large fish around Flatneck. Porgies are everywhere and just about as many as you want. Come on out, the weather is fine, finally. 06-29-03 BLUES,BLUES,BLUES and more BLUES. Plenty of bluefish action this week jigging and chunking. Highlight trip of the week was the Mike McDermitt party of 4, that nearly limited out with 37 blues. They also added 2 nice sea bass while chunking. On the fluke front, the Jim Rogan party had some keepers and a bunch of shorts but the hot, humid, no breeze weather made drifting tough. We will see what this week brings, every day is a new adventure. 06-21-03 Fishing improved big time last week. Stripers, blues and fluke all plentiful. Highlights went to the Blazer Pub crew who boated 23 blues, 3 fluke and a couple of keeper striped bass including Don Hopko's 18 pounder. This crew has reclaimed "A" team honors. 06-03-03 AT LONG LAST, the water temp has gone up to 59 degrees. This has helped to improve the fluke bite considerably. Bluefish have also arrived in the 3 to 4 pound range. Bonus for the week was a 4 pound Black Sea Bass landed by the Manny L. party on Friday. Things are heating up after a long dry spell, so give us a call. BHH 05-26-03 It has been a while since our last update. Sorry about that, but the weather has made fishing tough. Flounder again this spring where hard to come by. The fish taken where nice size but few and far between with very few shorts. That is not a good sign for the fishery in this area. Stripers have also been hit and miss, but they are around. The good news is fluke are starting to show but with the water temp still around 51 degrees they are also slow to the bite. We have started to catch blues in mid Sound even with the water temp down, so go figure. If the sun ever shines again, the water temp should go up and so will the catch. Maybe not the report you wanted to hear. Definately not the report we like to give, but we tell it like it is. The only thing you will read here are the facts, not hype. Sometimes the challenge is half the fun. Give us a call, now is the time to book to insure you get the dates you want. Hope to see you soon.

Remember keep what you can use and release the rest.
